Boat accidents far exceed any other part of the state
Boating deaths and accidents surged in Florida Keys waters in 2005, keeping Monroe County in its dubious spot at the top of Florida's maritime mayhem.
State officials noted that Monroe County's 29,990 registered boats rank well below several other more populous counties.
“All those other people are coming down here and don't know what they're doing,” said Duke Pontin from Sea Tow of the Florida Keys, based on Big Pine Key.
“They're on vacation and their minds are in LaLa Land while trying to navigate, and we've got some pretty tricky waters,” Pontin said.
