Tug Valour Sinking - What was the Cause??

Readers: We have seen a lot of interest in the Tug Valour Sinking. The internet has been short on news. This should be anticipated as the Coast Guard and the Company conduct an investigation into why this tragedy occurred. We would still be interested to know from any source more about what happened out there. We are sure the crew is still trying to come to grips with this horrible incident and get on with their lives. If anyone else out there that has information that they could share we and our readers would be interested to know. Thanks and safe sailing. Dwayne

Video Story of the East Hampton Dory Rescue Squad

This is an awesome video that I found on google video. It is a story of men and the sea. It is a story of men risking their lives to help others because they had the skills to do it and no one else was there to fill the void. It is a story of selfless devotion to others in the name of helping those in peril at sea. It is a great story and worth the 20 minutes to watch.
Get a cup of java and sit back and watch this. You will be glad you did if you love the sea as much as we do.

Was the weather that was encountered by the Tug Valour when she went down expected and anticipated or not?? Did it change or get worse than the crew or company anticipated? Was it unusual or normal for that area and time of year? How much a factor was it in this casualty? We have cited several articles below but they do not address these issues. Dwayne

Maritrans, the Coast Guard and the families of the crew do not yet know why the Tug Valour took on water and went down in 14 foot seas. A tug of that size should have been able to handle those seas. Maybe interviews of the rescued crew, examination of the tug (if possible) or a review of company records will shed some light on why this tragedy occurred. Dwayne Clark

Coast Guard searching for two crewmembers of sunken tugboat off Cape Fear; one dead (Sun-Sentinel)

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Coast Guard searched on Wednesday for two crewmembers of a tugboat that sank about 40 miles off Cape Fear in gale-force wind and high seas as a storm lashed the East Coast. One crewmate was confirmed dead.

Two Crew lost in Tugboat sinking off Cape Fear

Jan. 18, 2006, 2:34PM Two Sailors Die, One Missing Off Cape Fear © 2006 The Associated Press WILMINGTON, N.C. — Two sailors aboard a tugboat died when their boat sank about 40 miles off Cape Fear in gale-force wind and high seas, the Coast Guard said Wednesday as a search continued for one sailor who remained missing. The 135-foot tugboat Valour began sinking late Tuesday while pulling a 500-foot barge loaded with about 5.5 million gallons of petroleum byproduct. The tug's crew called the Coast Guard for help after one sailor fell overboard. That crew member made it back aboard the ship, said Petty Officer Lawrence Chambers. A Coast Guard helicopter rescued another sailor and took him to a hospital in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he remained Wednesday. Another tugboat rescued five other sailors before the Valour sank. It was not immediately clear when the sailor died. The body of the second victim was found when the tug's owner, Maritrans Inc., found the sunken boat. Maritrans, based in Tampa, Fla., said in a statement Wednesday it didn't know why the boat sank. The missing sailor was wearing a "survivor suit" that could allow him to remain in the water for up to 30 hours, Chambers said. The barge was found adrift Wednesday and was to be towed to port by another tugboat, Chambers said.
