A replica of 15th century caravel of Portuguese navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral sails past Lisbon's riverside 16th century Belem tower, Wednesday March 8 2000, at the start of a regatta linking Lisbon to Brazil celebrating the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil by Cabral. The presidents of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, watched from the tower, built to celebrate the Portuguese 15th and 16th century sea voyages, as the sailboats participating in the regatta sailed by in the Tagus river.
