JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced start dates on Friday for the upcoming dredging of U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay and a sand placement project at Fernandina Beach. The Corps said the sand dredged from Kings Bay will be used in the Fernandina Beach project, saving about $13.5 million. 

Nassau County residents and visitors will begin seeing construction equipment and dredging pipes on Fernandina Beach around the first week of January in preparation for the next scheduled maintenance dredging of U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay and sand placement at Fernandina Beach, which is scheduled to begin mid-February.

ELEUTHERA, Bahamas — The U.S. Coast Guard resumed its search early Saturday across Bahamian waters for a disabled cargo ship with 33 crewmembers, including 28 Americans, that lost contact during Hurricane Joaquin, which was moving away from the sprawling archipelago.
The 735-foot (224-meter) ship named El Faro had taken on water and was earlier reported to be listing at 15 degrees near Crooked Island, one of the islands most battered by the hurricane. The Coast Guard said it hadn't been able to re-establish communication with the vessel, which was traveling from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it was disabled by the storm.

(CNN)For more than 36 hours, there's been no word from, and no sign of, the U.S.-flagged container ship El Faro.

That means no news on what's happened to the 28 Americans and five Poles aboard, faced with the full fury of Hurricane Joaquin and its up to 150 mph gusts, 30-foot waves and potentially 25 inches of rain.

After eyeing other Southeastern ports, Crowley consolidates its Puerto Rico service at Jaxport

Crowley Maritime Corp. is consolidating its Jacksonville operations, with Crowley Liner Services Inc. relocating its Puerto Rican service from its private terminal to the Jacksonville Port Authority's Talleyrand Marine Terminal.
Although John Hourihan, Crowley senior vice president and general manager of Puerto Rico operations, said the company considered other ports — including Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; and several small ports in the Southeast — the company ultimately decided to stay in Jacksonville, where it is headquartered.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Florida Fish and Wildlife officials are investigating after a deadly boating accident three miles east of Boca Chita Key Sunday.
According to FWC’s Jorge Pino, a 23-foot MAKO capsized when a wave swamped the boat.

According to a press release, Carnival plans to install new, higher-speed wireless internet service on its 101 cruise ships to enable passengers to stay in touch with work or loved ones while on vacation.
"Our smart hybrid network will not only enhance our guests' onboard experience and help our crew members keep in touch with their friends and family at home, but we believe it will also help us attract new cruisers, especially millennials who have made connectivity and social media an everyday part of their lives," Ramon Millan, Carnival’s senior vice president and global chief information officer was quoted as saying.
The service, which — according to the press release — Carnival calls “WiFi@Sea,” combines standard, shore-based wireless with, long-range, shore-based services  and satellite-connected access to keep guests connected throughout their cruise. The press release said the new system will be 10-times faster than the internet service previously offered by Carnival.
In the press release, Carnival said it plans to launch the new service this year, beginning with ships sailing in the Caribbean, before expanding to its other routes and brands over the next two years.

Jacksovnille Dredging Projects

Congresswoman Corrine Brown and Congressman Ander Crenshaw are still pushing to get the project for the deepening of the St. Johns River in the Water Resources Development Act Conference Report.
The legislators sent a bipartisan Congressional delegation letter to the House and Senate Transportation Committee Chairs and Ranking Members asking for contingency language in the conference report to authorize U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects that receive a final Chief’s report up to one year after enactment of the bill, according to a news release.
If accepted, this change would allow Jaxport to prepare the port for larger modern ships set to arrive in 2015.
